New Single - Listen to the Rhythm Assaf Spector, Jonny Shemz, Yo Momma

The Rhythm Returns: Yo Momma's Long-Awaited Revival

In the vibrant music scene of early 2025, a remarkable resurrection story is unfolding. After nearly three decades in limbo, the band Yo Momma has finally emerged from obscurity to release their long-lost album "Rare Soul," with their latest single "Listen to the Rhythm" capturing the attention of music enthusiasts everywhere.

A Tale of Musical Resurrection

Rewind to 1998: Brooklyn's Vibromonk Studios was the birthplace of what should have been Yo Momma's breakthrough album. The band—comprising Jonny Shemz on lead vocals and guitar, Assaf Spector on bass and backup vocals, alongside collaborators including Tamir Muskat (of Balkan Beat Box fame), keyboardist Brockett Parsons, Thomas Hutchings on saxophone, and Satish handling trumpet duties—had created something special. Under the production expertise of Tamir Muskat and Dany Shatzky, "Rare Soul" was completed, polished, and primed for release.

But as the story often goes in the music industry, plans fell apart. The band disbanded shortly after recording, and "Rare Soul" was shelved, becoming one of those legendary "lost albums" that music aficionados whisper about.

Fast Forward to 2025

In an unexpected turn of events that has delighted long-time fans and new listeners alike, Yo Momma has reunited. On February 14, 2025, they released "Listen To Us," the first single from their finally-unearthed album. The response was immediate and enthusiastic, proving that good music truly is timeless.

"Listen to the Rhythm": A Fresh Take on a Hidden Gem

Not content to simply release their vintage material, core members Assaf Spector and Jonny Shemz have reimagined one of their standout tracks. "Listen to the Rhythm" is a contemporary reinterpretation of "Listen To Us," maintaining the soul of the original while infusing it with modern sensibilities.

The new single showcases Spector's hypnotic bass lines providing a solid foundation, while Shemz's guitar work adds layers of spice and texture throughout. Brockett Parsons brings soulful dimensions with his masterful keyboard work on both clavinet and Fender Rhodes, while Thomas Hutchings' saxophone performances add sensual, jazzy elements that elevate the track to new heights.

Why This Matters

This release represents more than just a new single—it's the culmination of a 27-year journey from creation to public ears. In an age where the music industry moves at lightning speed, there's something profoundly satisfying about an album finding its audience after such a long delay.

The story of Yo Momma and "Rare Soul" reminds us that art isn't bound by time constraints. Sometimes, the perfect moment for music to emerge isn't when it's created, but when the world is ready to receive it.

For fans of soul, funk, and authentic musicianship, "Listen to the Rhythm" offers a rare opportunity to discover something both new and vintage simultaneously—a musical time capsule opened at precisely the right moment.

As the band continues to roll out more material from their long-awaited album, one thing is certain: the rhythm was always there—we just needed to listen.
